DrikNEWS is part of a network of sites that work towards Alam's vision of growing the number of "majority world" (his term for the countries outside the United States and Europe) photographers. Behind this goal is a desire to allow these nations to represent themselves in the media, instead of relying on outside photographers to define them. Just as importantly, Alam created Drik to serve as an agency to maintain editorial control over those images in order to eliminate a "northern slant" to the news. Alam's overall project includes a highly-praised educational program.
DrikNEWS presents a new locally-produced documentary or photojournalism project almost every other day.
